The University of Roorkee was established in the year of 1847. It was the time when the British were ruling the country. India was in full control of the British, during that period, when the First Engineering College was set up. After 7 years of its establishment the university was renamed "The Thomason College of Civil Engineering". When India got freedom the institution was given its status as IIT Roorkee University in the year 1949. Today, the university is playing a crucial role in imparting advanced technical education to aspirants.

India Jawahar Lal Nehru confronted the charter in 1949 for the college
